We are Scotland’s largest towns’ collective, representing and promoting the diversity of our towns and places, and supporting those organisations and groups that have an interest in or ownership of them. We are tasked by Scottish Government to support delivery of the Town Centre Action Plan and promote Scotland’s Town Centre First Principle. This principle applies to decisions taken by those in central and local government as well as national agencies and public bodies.
The principle asks that the public sector put the health of town centres at the heart of their decision making, and that it adopts a collaborative approach which supports a longer-term vision and plan for each town centre. Alongside the Scottish Government, we wish to encourage new town centre development which simultaneously raises the standard of urban design, supports a range of activities and generates positive economic and community benefit for the local area.

New Waverley is a major £150 million regeneration of one of Edinburgh’s most significant gap sites in the heart of the Old Town, with the first phase scheduled for completion in early 2016. The 7.5 acre site links Waverley Station in the north to the iconic Royal Mile to the south, re-integrating this historic yet neglected part of the Capital back into the heart of the city.
Reflecting the unique environment in which it sits, New Waverley represents a fascinating contrast between old and new. At the heart of the development is a £6.5 million public square, surrounded by a mix of restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels – as well as offices and new homes. Yet interlinked within its contemporary footprint are glimpses of its historic past which form a vital part of its future. This includes a row of historic Victorian arches transformed into a new arts, retail and leisure quarter and packed with independent traders, restaurants and bars.
